2005 was the "year of the foot" and
the theme for the World Diabetes Day last year was diabetic foot
care. People with diabetes are 25 times more likely to loose a leg
than others. Throughout the world, up to 70% of all leg amputations,
happen to people with diabetes. The economic and psychological impact
is immense. In many cases victims can no longer provide for themselves
or their families, more than 1 million people with diabetes loose
a leg every year, this means that every 30 seconds a lower limb
is lost due to diabetes somewhere in the world. The majority of
these amputations are preceded by a foot ulcer, which can be prevented
at the very outset. In developing countries like India foot problems
are more common than in western countries.
Remember, an ill fitting shoe can cause a greater harm than not
wearing shoes. Many busy general practioners
do not have enough time to inspect their diabetic patient's feet,
this should be pointed out by the patients and they should insist
on inspection of the feet. For the doctor, it is very important
to know a detailed history of the patient before examining the feet.
